Princess was recorded at Uptown Studios.
Lyrics
The radio was still on when
Grandpa fell asleep again
The car came in he jumped at least
Four feet off his favorite seat
I was in the kitchen then
Making dinner for us when
With a crash that startled me
I met a girl from MTV
She had always looked so good to me…
She had always seemed so well to me…
Missy drove a five-speed car
With on the hood a turquoise star
That broke the glass and parked inside
The small brick house where we reside
Captivating in her seat
Missy seemed to be asleep
I was unaware of it
But she took too much heroin
She took too much heroin
A Princess if I'd ever seen
Movie, club, or magizine
A Princess if I'd ever seen
Movie, club, or magizine
Song Information
From Aaron:
"“The radio was playing shit again”
And so those six words sat alone on a page in my 9 ½ by 6” notebook, purchased for $0.49 at Goodwill, for at least 6 months; you can see the different shades of ink in the picture. Then one day at the library, and in between classes at Columbia, I rediscovered it, and in a matter of 5 minutes, wrote Princess. It was one of those songs that wrote itself. The universe used me as a conduit to generate this satirical look at life in these United States. Matt and I played it and added the “She had always looked so good to me…” part when I got home that night and, in May 2008, we recorded it at Uptown Recording in Chicago. It’s the only song that I know of that harmonizes the word “heroin.” Sometimes when we play it live, I replace “Missy” with “Brittany” or “Lindsay,” the parallels are too obvious to ignore."
